Dark bay gelding, 2014, Boys at Tosconova–Backslash, by Sharp Humor (NY)
BIOGRAPHY: The 10 year-old gelding–bred and trained by Michelle Nevin and co-owned by Koch’s Little Red Feather Racing Stable–won $837,288 in earnings over a 38-start, 11-win career. My Boy Tate made his debut as a 3-year-old in 2017, joined the Little Red Feather team after two starts in Nevin’s silks and made himself a favorite with just about everyone he met. He was foaled at Rockridge Stud in nearby Hudson. His 2021 season was his best, with three wins and three seconds from 10 starts for $227,500. The campaign started early with fourths in the Gravesend and Say Florida Sandy Stakes a week apart at Aqueduct in January. Next came wins in the Hollie Hughes and Haynesfield at Aqueduct, solid seconds in two stakes at Saratoga, a Parx allowance romp, and a second to Lobsta in the New York Stallion Series in December. He was named champion New York-bred male sprinter at season’s end, an honor for which he was a finalist several times, including 2022.
Retired to ReRun through the TAKE THE LEAD Program in the spring of 2023, Tate spent 8 months adjusting to life away from the track before being adopted by Kendra Richardson and her daughter Raina and heading to New Jersey. He has been started back under saddle and, depending on how he develops over the summer, is heading to the 2024 Retired Racehorse Makeover Project.
WHY MY BOY TATE DESERVES YOUR VOTE: Rerun has rehomed Tate and three of his siblings. Always a quirky horse, it took him a while to settle in and just relax. Tate typifies what it is to be a New York-bred–he was raised, trained, raced and retired in New York by New York connections and he was a New York Champion. Racing fans know Tate and were always excited to see him race. Michelle Nevin contacted Lisa Molloy at ReRun after Tate was retired and said she felt his Champion trophy should be with him. She sent it to Raina and his adoptive family. Tate is a perfect example of New York aftercare at work.
