TAKE THE LEAD is a retirement program for Thoroughbreds stabled at the New York Racing Association tracks. We facilitate the search for rehabilitation and retraining placements for retiring NYRA racehorses with Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance-accredited aftercare organizations.
Cost:
There is no charge to submit a horse to the program, but donations to the aftercare organizations encouraged.
Application Process:
If you are interested in retiring a horse through TAKE THE LEAD, you must complete the in-take form that includes information about the horse, as well as the owner and trainer. You can submit the application form HERE.
Complete the required TAKE THE LEAD Vet Report HERE.
The owner or trainer of the horse to be retired must also submit the following:
- Jockey Club foal papers;
- a negative Coggins test;
- pertinent diagnostics, including x-rays, ultrasounds and post-op reports.
Once the application is submitted to TAKE THE LEAD, a representative from the organization will arrange for a comprehensive evaluation of the retiring racehorse by a licensed veterinarian, and provide a report of the evaluation.
TAKE THE LEAD will then contact its partner rehabilitation and retraining programs to find a placement facility, and serve as a liaison between the program and the horse’s owner and/or trainer.
TAKE THE LEAD will also arrange and pay for transportation to the rehabilitation or retraining facility.
